The winner of the 2016 Working on Country's photography competition People's Choice Award has been decided. This year, the photo 'Protecting the Larrakardi' by the Nyikina Mangala Rangers in the Kimberly (Western Australia) has been voted as the most popular photo of the forty shortlisted finalists.

Layneisha Sgro is the 2016 National NAIDOC Scholar of the Year. The Nyiyaparli, Bardi and Jabbir Jabbir woman from Broome is currently studying at the University of Melbourne and wants to use her skills and knowledge to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gain self-determination.

Can you sing a song in the traditional language of your area? Splash ABC is inviting schools to work with their local Indigenous community to translate the song 'Marrin Gamu' into the first language of their area, then to record students singing it. The first prize is a visit from a video production team to film the winning students singing. The runner-up prize is a bespoke language resource package designed for your school by First Languages Australia. You can submit an entry now and entries close 5PM 10 Aug 2016.

NAIDOC Week - established in 1938 - is the opportunity to proudly acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) held the annual National Native Title Conference in Darwin in June. The Conference was co-convened with the Northern Land Council (NLC) and hosted by the Larrakia people. AIATSIS CEO Russell Taylor AM was pleased to see a record number of registered delegates this year and an increase in sponsorship which supports Indigenous delegates to attend the conference.

The full list of award-winners for the 2016 Working on Country Photography competition is now available. The winners were announced at the launch of the Working on Country Photography Competition Exhibition at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The biennial competition is a celebration of the 170 Indigenous Ranger and Indigenous Protected Area groups working to protect almost 60 million hectares of Australia’s natural and cultural assets. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ continuous presence and cultural ties to traditional lands are represented in the photos.
