he Australian Government has today announced it will provide $70,000 to the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival in the Torres Strait. The four-day cultural festival will be hosted by the Torres Shire Council on Thursday Island next week (13 to 16 September) and feature more than 400 performers and artists from more than 20 communities. Founded in the late 1980s, this biennial event is one of the most significant cultural gatherings for Torres Strait Islanders with more than 5000 people coming together to celebrate and share traditional culture.
Developing artists is what NAISDA is all about.

Today is R U OK? Day – a day to reach out to people you know, from family, to friends and work colleagues, to ask if they are okay. Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, who is a Conversation Hero with the R U OK? organisation, said that having a simple conversation with someone could help to prevent a small problem from becoming a bigger one. Minister Scullion said suicide rates were twice as high for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as for non-Indigenous Australians, with the highest rates occurring before the age of 40.

The Coalition Government is partnering with the Adelaide Crows AFL club to deliver the Ready Set Crow Project to help Indigenous children from remote South Australian communities attend school in Adelaide and develop pathways to further education. Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said today the Government would invest $300,000 in the Ready Set Crow Project to build on the success of the Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS) in South Australia.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations in remote Australia can now apply to receive support and be empowered to archive and preserve their audiovisual cultural heritage. Now in its second year, the Indigenous Remote Archival Fellowship is a partnership of the Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA), the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS).

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, will spend the coming week in Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait meeting with elected leaders, traditional owners, community members, stakeholders and service providers. This will be the first opportunity Minister Scullion has had to meet with elected council members in their communities since Queensland’s local government elections in March 2016. He will meet with mayors and councillors in Yarrabah, Napranum, Aurukun and the Northern Peninsula Area.

Three artists and 10 Aboriginal kids gathered at the Indigenous Literacy Foundation Spinifex Writers Camp in Tjunttjuntjara, WA for a series of fun and laughter filled workshops about writing, illustrating and story-telling.

Magnolia Maymaru became the first woman from a remote Indigenous community to be chosen for the Miss World national finals. She is using the experience she gained from the finals to help children in her community Yirrkala.

The inaugural national Indigenous Digital Excellence (IDX) Awards have been launched with a mission to uncover everyday digital excellence and inspire Indigenous entrepreneurs, businesses and young people.

To be held at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) on the 29 September 2017, the national awards will showcase IDX to corporate Australia.

The awards come on the back of an Australia-wide research project undertaken by NCIE in partnership with the Telstra Foundation to capture and build Indigenous digital excellence.

It was all hands on deck as locals took part in a Clean –Up Australia Day event in the remote NT community of Soapy Bore.
