About this site

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this website may contain images of deceased people.

This website is designed to connect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with Australian Government policies and programs and raise awareness about the initiatives that affect them most.

The site shares news and events as well as stories from individuals, communities and organisations across Australia. They are real stories about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the challenges and opportunities facing them, and the successes and achievements being demonstrated every day.

The five program streams of the Australian Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy (below) have been used to shape the navigation of the site, reflecting the key areas of focus for Indigenous affairs.

Indigenous Advancement Strategy

The Australian Government has made Indigenous Affairs a significant national priority. The Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS) is the way in which the Australian Government funds and delivers a range of programs targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, including:

  • Jobs, Land and Economy
  • Children and Schooling
  • Safety and Wellbeing
  • Culture and Capability
  • Remote Australia Strategies
  • Research and Evaluation

Through the IAS, the Australian Government is working to improve the way the Government does business with Indigenous Australians to ensure funding achieves outcomes. The structure of the IAS supports working with Indigenous Australians, communities, industries, business and service providers. It allows for joint development of solutions at the regional and local level. Funded providers are expected to work closely with Indigenous communities in the design and delivery of projects.

The IAS is supported by the Regional Network in NIAA, which positions senior decision makers close to the people and communities they work with. Staff in the NIAA Regional Network work closely with funded providers and communities to develop and implement local solutions to improve outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

The Indigenous Advancement Strategy is changing the way Australian Government funding is delivered to ensure it is more flexible and better designed to meet the aspirations and priorities of individual communities. Together, we can achieve real and lasting results to close the gap on disadvantage and ensure all Australians have the same opportunities in life.
