About this site
Indigenous.gov.au connects First Nations peoples with Australian Government programs through stories, news and announcements.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of deceased persons.
Story-telling since 2012
Stories from First Nations peoples across Australia are at the heart of the site. They are real stories about the challenges they face, the opportunities and the successes.
This focus on storytelling is intended to speak to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities across country. It was something people said they wanted more of when we asked for feedback:
We like seeing what is happening in other communities, how they are managing and for inspiration.
...we want to know what’s happening … for our people.
Sand lines
The hand-drawn sand lines that curve and weave their way across the pages are inspired by the way Elders have been telling stories by drawing in the sand for tens of thousands of years. This design draws people to the stories that are the focus of the site. Aboriginal-owned creative agency, Impact Digi in Karratha, refreshed the site design in 2024.
A community focus
The Community map shows all the Communities listed on this site. Stories and other information are listed on the relevant community page. We update the pages as more information is provided. You can ask to add your community. We will review the request and may publish details as appropriate.
We want to have more control in wayfinding information
A whole-of-government resource
Australian Government departments and agencies contribute to the site. They provide the stories, as well as grant opportunities, community consultations and Ministerial announcements and other news.
First Nations peoples told these were critical opportunities that they couldn’t afford to miss.
We want more opportunities to understand the decisions that affect us.
We want to know when others want to meet and talk with us, when they are coming into our community.
