The National NAIDOC Committee has extended nominations for this years National NAIDOC Awards until 5.00 PM AEST on Friday 22 April to give you a bit more time to complete your nomination. Don't forget to use the selection criteria to tell us the story of the inspirational person you are nominating. Hurry, nominations have to close this Friday and no further extensions will be provided. Award recipients will be honoured during NAIDOC Week at the 2016 National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony to be held in picturesque Darwin on Friday 8 July – Nominate here.

Indigenous Australians looking to start their career in the public service can now apply for the Indigenous Apprenticeships Programme. Indigenous Apprenticeships provide an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to forge interesting and fulfilling career paths with the Australian Government. Last year the Department of Human Services expanded its popular entry-level employment and development programme to recruit for other government departments as well.

The communities of Canteen Creek and Epenarra, south-east of Tennant Creek, have new community stores, thanks to a $4.3 million grant from the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA). Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, today congratulated both communities, the Canteen Creek Owairtilla Aboriginal Corporation and the Wetenngerr Aboriginal Corporation in Epenarra, for working with the contractor Probuild (NT) Pty Ltd to build the new stores, which replace outdated facilities. Both stores were officially opened today.

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, today met with the traditional owners of the Kenbi Land Claim to celebrate a significant milestone in the settlement of this long running land claim. The Kenbi settlement covers about 64,000 hectares of land – of which about 52,000 will be Aboriginal land – on the Cox Peninsula adjacent to Darwin. “This is one of the longest running land claims in the history of land rights in Australia and today we have moved one step closer to settlement,” Minister Scullion said.

The Forum celebrates the work done by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in preventing and responding to family violence. It is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers to come together and learn from, share with and inspire each other.

The event highlights strategies and programs that could be used effectively by others and there will be discussions that relate to working with men, women and children who are either victims, or perpetrators, of domestic and family violence.
