The Australian Government has strengthened its commitment to closing the gap in Indigenous life expectancy, with the launch of the latest phase of the National Tobacco Campaign. Don’t Make Smokes Your Story features new advertising materials specifically targeted at encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander smokers to make a serious quit attempt, not just for themselves but also for the health and wellbeing of their families.

Woolworths Limited has just launched an agreement with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to nearly double its Indigenous workforce over the next three years. The company has committed to employing an additional 1,600 Indigenous Australians under the Employment Parity Initiative. Jobs will be available across Australia with a particular focus on regional communities. Positions will be spread across all aspects of the business including customer service, bakery, butchery, hardware and homewares.

The Festival of Pacific Arts is the Pacific's largest regional cultural gathering, and the world's largest gathering of Indigenous Pacific cultures. Since 1972, the Festival has brought together the peoples from 27 Pacific Island nations and territories to share their cultures and establish deeper understanding and friendship. The Festival of Pacific Arts is held every four years and plays a vital role in safeguarding traditional practices by sharing and exchanging culture.

Congratulations to everyone chosen in the Indigenous Marathon Project’s (IMP) 2016 squad, who are in training for the New York Marathon later this year. Many squad members have been inspired by 2014 IMP graduate Elsie Seriat from the Torres Strait.

Sixteen hundred jobs for First Australians will be created by 2019 through a partnership between the Australian Government and one of Australia’s leading companies, Woolworths Limited. Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said today Woolworths already employed 2000 First Australians and its commitment to hire an additional 1600 was the biggest jobs commitment to date under the Government’s Employment Parity Initiative (EPI).

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released the findings of a major survey about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians - highlighting key improvements in education, health, and housing. Dr Paul Jelfs, the ABS Senior Reconciliation Champion, said the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey (NATSISS) is designed to provide a greater insight into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' participation in society, along with any barriers they face.
