I was deeply shocked and appalled by the extremely disturbing footage the ABC’s Four Corners programme aired last night regarding the treatment of youths, including Indigenous youths, by staff in the Northern Territory’s youth justice system. Any allegations prison staff have acted inappropriately should be thoroughly investigated by the relevant authorities and appropriate action taken. The welfare of youths who come into contact with the youth justice system should be the highest priority.
Thomas Amagula and Steve Roeger from Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation expect the forum to become a regular event.

Dr Robert Francis Isaacs is the 2016 National NAIDOC Male Elder of the Year. He has been involved in Indigenous affairs for over forty years and set up Clontarf Aboriginal College, the first Indigenous school in Australia.

ASIC has released a new series of videos designed to help Indigenous people with key money decisions. They encourage people to take time to think things over and walk away from high-pressure sales situations. The new videos focus on three topics: how to get the best deal on a car and your loan renting items for your home how to manage your store account or tab ASIC is also sharing the videos with Indigenous networks and financial counsellors working with Indigenous people, supporting the education work they conduct in remote and regional communities to address financial misconduct.

Nominations are now open for the 2017 round of the New Colombo Plan scholarships program and close on 29 July 2016. The program is an Australian Government initiative which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and intern in the region. It includes scholarships for study of up to one year, as well as internships, flexible mobility grant programs for short and longer-term study, clinical placements, practicums and research.
