The community of Bulla, south-west of Darwin, has a new community store, thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA).

This investment expands the range of healthy food options available in Bulla, as well as creating employment opportunities for the local community.

Ryan Johnston recently entered the Australian Government’s Community Development Programme (CDP) as an unemployed man with few qualifications. As part of his CDP activities, Ryan started training in woodwork, found he had an aptitude for it and has built some furniture for a local grandmother and some easels for the Karratha library.

The Coalition Government has started rolling out Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid training, with frontline workers in Durack, Western Australia, the first to benefit.

The first of six training workshops to be held in Durack gets under-way today in Meekatharra. Over time, the training will be rolled out to more than 1500 frontline workers in more than 60 remote locations across Australia.

Today the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet published updated data on Indigenous representation, by agency, for each Commonwealth public sector agency as at 30 June 2016.

This data includes individual agency targets. Each agency target reflects its current Indigenous representation and regional footprint.

The Coalition Government will provide $22.8 million to support a range of projects across the country that will strengthen Indigenous language and showcase traditional and contemporary Indigenous cultural and artistic expression.

Minister for the Arts, Mitch Fifield, and Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said that of this investment, more than $5 million would support a range of Indigenous language and arts projects across the NT.

The Federal Court has today recognised native title for the Kulyakartu people in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Lodged in 2005, the Kulyakartu claim was resolved at an on-country hearing of the Federal Court of Australia.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said the Kulyakartu determination covered an area of approximately 3550 square kilometres in remote Western Australia. It is surrounded by the Nyangumarta, Ngurrara and Martu determination areas.
