The inaugural national Indigenous Digital Excellence (IDX) Awards have been launched with a mission to uncover everyday digital excellence and inspire Indigenous entrepreneurs, businesses and young people.

To be held at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) on the 30 March 2017, the national awards will showcase IDX to corporate Australia.

The awards come on the back of an Australia-wide research project undertaken by NCIE in partnership with the Telstra Foundation to capture and build Indigenous digital excellence.

A historic agreement has been reached with the traditional owners of Gunyangara to enter into a township lease over their community in North East Arnhem Land.

The agreement – the first to result in a lease held by an Aboriginal corporation – will deliver a range of benefits to the traditional owners and local community, including better land administration, local decision making about land-use issues and greater support for commercial development and home ownership.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion, today announced an independent review into remote Indigenous housing to explore practical and innovative solutions to address the inadequate conditions and supply in remote Indigenous housing.

“Overcrowding, homelessness and poor housing conditions in remote Australia remain unacceptably high,” Minister Scullion said.

“This is despite significant investment from successive governments, including through the former National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing (NPARIH).

The seventh Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage Report from the Productivity Commission has found significant progress has been made across education, health and economic participation. 

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said the progress was the result of concerted effort across Government, but a great deal more needed to be done to address Indigenous disadvantage, including building the evidence of what worked.

Job seekers have been placed into more than 11,000 jobs through the Coalition Government’s remote employment and community development service, the Community Development Programme (CDP), since July 2015.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said the CDP was getting job seekers off welfare and into work and breaking the cycle of welfare dependency in remote areas of Australia.

Minister Scullion today spoke at the CDP Provider Business Meeting in Brisbane about the progress being made on the ground.

The Northern Land Council (NLC) has re-elected Samuel Bush-Blanasi as its Chairman, with John Christophersen elected Deputy Chairman at a Full Council meeting held at Timber Creek today.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, congratulated the Chair and Deputy Chair on their election to important positions within the leadership of land rights in the Northern Territory.

“I welcome Mr Bush-Blanasi's reappointment and continued leadership of the Northern Land Council since 2013,” Minister Scullion said.

The Turnbull Government is today officially opening a free legal advisory service for people engaging with the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory.

The Australian Government has provided $1.1 million for the Children in Care and Youth Detention Advice Service, which is being delivered by the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has congratulated 22 Indigenous rangers and four Indigenous Compliance Officers on completing their Certificate IV in Statutory Compliance at a graduation ceremony in Cairns today.

The graduates completed the course as part of the Coalition Government’s Specialised Indigenous Ranger Programme (SIRP).

“This programme is the first of its kind, a genuine partnership between the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) and federal and state governments,” Minister Scullion said.
