Celebrating NAIDOC Week Our Languages Matter 2-9 July 2017

The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017.

The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

The Coalition Government will work with the Western Australian Government and other stakeholders, including Indigenous leaders and the local government, to develop a youth engagement strategy for the Goldfields region.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and the Member for O'Connor, Rick Wilson, said today an important part of the strategy would be to engage local youths, particularly Indigenous youths, in the mining and pastoral industries.

“This is not about reinventing the wheel,” Minister Scullion said.

Indigenous land across the Goldfields region of Western Australia will be better preserved, thanks to a $660,000 investment by the Coalition Government in a new Indigenous ranger group. 

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and the Member for O’Connor, Rick Wilson, said today the Goldfields Land and Sea Council would receive $660,000 through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.

“This great local project will employ six new, young Indigenous rangers to conserve and care for their country through land management,” Minister Scullion said.

Goods and services provided included: building, construction, and maintenance; environmental management; workwear and promotional merchandise; media and marketing; communications; recruitment; education and training.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has welcomed the Kuruma Marthudunera (Part A) native determination delivered at a hearing of the Federal Court of Australia in the Pilbara region of Western Australia today.

The native title determination, handed down at a hearing at Mindoona, near Pannawonica, covers an area of approximately 4109 square kilometres in the upper reaches of the Robe River and Hamersley Ranges.
