Zibeon Fielding of Mimili in the APY Lands was part of a group of twelve Indigenous men and women, members of the Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP), who ran the 2016 New York Marathon. Prior to the founding of the IMP, no Indigenous man or woman had completed any major international marathon. Today Australia has 65 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander international marathoners.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has paid tribute to Dr Gumana AO, who passed away in Arnhem Land earlier this week.

“Dr Gumana was a senior Yolngu man and leader of the Dhalwangu clan whose many achievements spanned decades across arts, culture and Indigenous rights,” Minister Scullion said.

“He led an extraordinary life, advocating passionately for the advancement of Aboriginal people through land rights and the homelands movement.

A historic Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) covering about 22,000 square kilometres of land and water has been signed at a ceremony in Gladstone, Queensland, today.

The agreement has been struck between the Gladstone, Bundaberg and Burnett regional councils, the Gidarjil Cultural Heritage Corporation and the Applicant for the Port Curtis Coral Coast native title claim group.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said the ILUA was an important milestone in the journey of the Port Curtis coastal native title claim group.

Today, parliamentarians from across the political divide have come together to link arms in a historic display of support for the No More campaign that aims to end domestic and family violence in Indigenous communities. 

Founded by Indigenous leader Charlie King, the No More campaign also aims to foster a greater appreciation of, and respect for, women.

The Coalition Government has continued its support of the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation through the assistance provided by the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC).

ORIC has extended the special administration of the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation until 31 March 2017. The Darwin-based corporation was placed under special administration on 6 June 2016 after the Registrar received a request for assistance from the directors.

Minister Scullion, who attended tonight’s annual awards ceremony in Sydney, praised Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation and Murdi Paaki Regional Assembly as winners in their respective categories, as well as all Indigenous organisations recognised for their governance.
