With school returning at Gunbalanya today, Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said it was a timely reminder of the need for children in remote communities to be ready for school on day one of the new school year.

Minister Scullion commended the community of Gunbalanya for its support and encouragement to get students back to school today. Schools in other remote communities will resume later this month.

"We all want the very best for our children and we know a good education is a key to giving them the best start in life," Minister Scullion said.

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and the Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, have paid tribute to Ms Margaret Lawton who passed away last week in Rockhampton. 

Minister Scullion said Ms Lawton was a Ghungalu and Garingbail traditional owner and respected member of the Fitzroy Basin Elders Committee.

The community of Gunbalanya in the Northern Territory has a newly-refurbished community store, thanks to a $4.6 million grant from the Commonwealth Government’s Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA).

This investment expands the range of healthy food options available in Gunbalanya while creating employment opportunities for the local community.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, congratulated the Gunbalanya community and the Adjumarllarl Aboriginal Corporation (AAC) on the store officially being opened today.

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has welcomed the historic approval of a township sublease covering Mutitjulu, a community located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory.

Minister Scullion said the sublease would deliver better land administration, local decision making and opportunities for economic development.

“The Mutitjulu community told us they want land tenure options that work for them. We have listened and supported the community to develop this model of leasing that works for them,” Minister Scullion said.

A native title claim covering approximately 6100 square kilometres south-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia has been finalised today with the Federal Court recognising native title on Ngarlawangga country.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said the determination, delivered at the Tom Price Sports Stadium, recognised what the Ngarlawangga people had always known: that this was their country.

St Vincent’s Health Australia has become the latest Australian company to sign up to the Turnbull Government’s Employment Parity Initiative (EPI) by committing to take on an additional 500 Indigenous staff.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, who made the announcement at an event at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney today, said the EPI was an innovative way the Government was partnering with private sector firms to give Indigenous jobseekers life-changing employment opportunities.

Today, the Turnbull Government has released a consultation draft of terms of reference for the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) inquiry into the incarceration rate of Indigenous Australians.

The consultation draft is being released now to ensure all interested persons and groups, in particular those from Indigenous communities, can have a full opportunity to provide their feedback on the terms of reference.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, has strongly rejected the findings contained in an Australian National University (ANU) report about the Coalition Government’s Community Development Programme (CDP) that has been released today.

Minister Scullion noted the report, Job Creation and Income Support in Remote Indigenous Australia: Moving Forward with a Better System, was compiled by ANU academics, Dr Kirrily Jordan and Lisa Fowkes, without any input from his office or department.
