A native title claim covering approximately 20,000 square kilometres in the south-east Kimberley region of Western Australia has been finalised today with the Federal Court recognising native title on Ngurra Kayanta country. Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said the court’s determination at Jalyirr (located within the claim area) was a great result for the Ngurra Kayanta people and their legal representative, Central Desert Native Title Services, and recognised the hard work of everyone involved. “The area covered by the Ngurra Kayanta determination is in an extremely remote region of Western Australia that forms part of the ‘Western Desert Cultural Bloc’,” Minister Scullion said. “The determination area is important to the Ngurra Kayanta people through their ongoing connection to country. “The Ngurra Kayanta people now have the certainty that their rights and interests and ongoing connection to country are preserved for current and future generations. “The Australian Government is working with native title holders across the country to ensure native title rights and interests deliver the benefits they should, including opportunities for native title holders to engage in activities that support their economic development.” Further information about the Government’s commitment to supporting Indigenous land owners and native title holders is available at: www.dpmc.gov.au/indigenous-affairs/land
