The celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our past, present and future will be recognised by the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) events later this year.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to come together and celebrate the unique place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.

"The national theme this year is We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate," the Minister said.

"The theme highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea and hundreds of events will be held across the country from 5-12 July."

Minister Scullion says the Government will support these important events by making funding available under the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.

"The 2015 NAIDOC Grant Funding Round is part of a more than $2 million commitment from the Australian Government to support NAIDOC celebrations this year," he said.

"NAIDOC week is an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous sacred sites, show respect to those who work tirelessly on preserving Country and celebrate the significance of Australia's vast landscape to Indigenous peoples."
