“Healthy Country, Healthy Waters, Healthy Communities” Photographic and Video competition 2024

Open to First Nations Land and Water Managers, Indigenous rangers, Indigenous Protected Area providers, and Communities to showcase your work in the Working on Country Healthy Country, Healthy Waters, Healthy Communities, photographic and short video competition.

Entries open: 14 October 2024

Entries close: 16 December 2024

Information

The “Healthy Country, Healthy Waters, Healthy Communities” Working on Country competition is sponsored by the NIAA. Prizes include a Mavic Drone, iPads, binoculars and lots more.

Entry is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in the Land and Water Management sector.

Winners will be supported to attend the awards ceremony and will be recognised whenever their image is used.

You can submit as many photos and short videos as you like in either one or more categories that you are eligible for.  

Showcase your work

Your photo or short video (1- 3 mins in length) entry should showcase Working on Country and can include:

  • management of Country
  • transfer of traditional Indigenous knowledge between Elders and young people
  • trips on Country with schools, rangers and junior ranger programs
  • two-way learning, including conservation or cultural research projects
  • partnerships
  • Indigenous enterprise or innovation.

Categories

You can enter into any or all of the 4 categories:

  • Category 1 – Healthy Country, Healthy Water, Healthy Communities
    All photos by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can be entered into this category.
  • Category 2 – Indigenous Youth
    Open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people younger than 25 years.
  • Category 3 – Indigenous Women working on Country
    Only photos taken by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women can be entered into this category. Photos should show women Working on Country.
  • Category 4 – Best short video
    This category is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and should be between 1 and 3 minutes in length.

Judging panel

A First Nations judging panel will be made up of land and water managers, a professional photographer and/or videographer and an NIAA representative.

Awards

Awards for first, second and third place will be decided by the judging panel for all 4 categories.

People’s choice award

Once the judging panel has shortlisted the photo and video entries, the public will be invited to vote on the shortlisted entries to select a winning entry for the People’s choice award.

  • Shortlist open for People’s choice: 24 February 2025
  • Voting People’s Choice Award closed: 24 March 2025
  • Announcement of the winning entries: April 2025
