The Morrison Government is providing $405,000 over two years to support the design and delivery of the ‘Back to the Bush’ youth engagement program on Palm Island, Queensland.

Member for Herbert, Phillip Thompson OAM, MP, said the initial project was designed by local Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Councillor and Community Justice Group member, Deniece Geia.

'This is a great example of the Palm Island community working closely with Government to develop a program that directly addresses the needs identified by community leaders,' Mr Thompson said.

'Being led by community and developed in partnership with the National Indigenous Australians Agency speaks to the Morrison Government’s commitment to work differently with Indigenous Australians and support communities to drive positive outcomes at the local level.

'Like many things, COVID-19 has delayed the project, but we’re pleased it is now on track to commence in the September school holidays.'

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said the program backed by the Queensland Police Citizens Youth Welfare Association will support up to 50 young people to re-engage in services and school and divert them from harmful behaviours.

'Helping young people engage with and contribute to their community is so important to lay the foundations for a positive future,' Minister Wyatt said.

'A strong and supportive network of family, friends, school and co-curricular activities underpins social and emotional wellbeing and leads to reductions in violence, crime and other destructive activity.

'The ‘Back to the Bush’ program designed by the community, for the community, will reconnect people in a positive way in a culturally appropriate and safe setting so they can reach their potential and achieve their goals.
