International Women’s Day is Friday the 8 March.

This year’s theme is ‘More Powerful Together’.

In celebration of this important day, Indigenous.gov.au searched its archives and found stories to share which showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who are showing us that we are ‘More Powerful Together’.

It includes inspiring stories from women like Andrea Cameron from Palumpa in the NT who helps keep her community safe as a night patroller, and artist Elisa Jane Carmichael who shares her saltwater country heritage with the world.

Ms Cameron used her previous experience as a member of the NT police to be successful in the role of patrolling the streets at night, offering culturally sensitive assistance and transporting community members to safety.

These are just a few of the many wonderful things done by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in Australia that we’ve recorded over the past year.

Last year’s NAIDOC theme was ‘Because of her, we can’ highlighted the important role that women play in our lives.
