ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

The Australian Government acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the Elders past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices and names of deceased persons.

Welcome to Indigenous.gov.au

After 22 years and more than 3000 deadly stories, Indigenous.gov.au has been refreshed. The new design focuses on storytelling that speaks to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities across country.

From the first story about future leaders from Darwin back in 2012 to a story in 2019 on Chatting with teens is important for online safety, you’ll find out the many experiences, successes and challenges of government programs working in communities.

Stories generously shared by survivors of the Stolen Generations like, Eileen Mosley: 'I won't be beaten'.

And stories about the awe-inspiring Barefoot Pilot Tyeisha Clake and First Nations innovators, Darryl Lyons and Mic Black talk about how they used ancient knowledge to show CSIRO scientists how to create electricity to make crops grow bigger and faster.

Or about how Taribelang Bunda man, Kelvin Rowe cares for country through his work as a Senior Sea Ranger.

There are so many stories of First Nations resilience and success to list – but Gunditjmara, Gunnai woman, Lisa Thorpe and Bubup CEO’s award-winning work to help raise a generation of strong and proud First Nations kids and future leaders is worth a read.

Eddie Koiki Mabo’s land rights legacy, Michael Long’s work to stop racial abuse and the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra are among the many stories that can help all Australians learn about First Nations peoples’ experiences and contributions. These stories raise awareness of the many issues that affect First Nations peoples as they strive to make a difference and bring about positive change.

These stories and more are about connecting First Nations peoples with Australian Government programs and activities. You will find information about grant opportunities or community consultations – to have your say in how government designs and delivers policies, programs and services that impact First Nations people the most.

Indigenous.gov.au is also a place where the stories can help all Australians learn more about the diversity of First Nations peoples’ cultures, traditions, and communities and their contributions to Australia's national story.
