Applications for the Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarships for 2013 are now open and will close on 16 September 2012.
The Scheme was established in recognition of Dr Arnold 'Puggy' Hunter's significant contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and in his previous role as Chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO).
The aim of the scheme is to assist in increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with professional health qualifications.
Scholarships will be available for the start of the 2013 academic year and are worth up to $7500 per year for part time study and up to $15 000 per year for full time study.
The scholarship provides financial assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are or will be studying at a TAFE (certificate IV and above) or entry level university course in the following health professions:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker
- Allied health (excluding pharmacy)
- Dentistry/oral health (excluding dental assistants)
- Medicine
- Midwifery
- Nursing
The Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, and administered by Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA).

Scholarships are available through a competitive process and are awarded on the recommendation and ranking of a selection committee, based on how the applicant addresses the selection question outlined in the application
