ORIC Spotlight On: Credit for mitigating climate change

Jobs, Land and Economy
A man stands in thigh deep savannah grass, surrounded by trees. He is wearing a cap with sunglasses on top and a maroon polo shirt with varying blue detail on the left side.

The Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation’s savannah fire program has reached a significant milestone in their efforts to protect the land and climate.

The Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation in the Northern Kimberley, WA, is combining traditional fire management knowledge and practice with contemporary scientific practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and—at the same time—earn money for their people and their communities.

The corporation employs traditional land-owners as rangers and fire-specialists to conduct annual cool burns in return for carbon credits. They recently reached a significant milestone when they were awarded the 100 millionth carbon credit by the Australian Government.

To learn more about the Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation and their work, check out this month’s Spotlight On from the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations.
