Doomadgee State School in North West Queensland has a creative answer to keeping students learning and engaged during COVID-19.

Doomadgee State School in North West Queensland hasn’t let COVID-19 stop their students from continuing their schooling.

While the school has remained open during Term 2, teachers at Doomadgee State School have filmed ‘mini lessons’ on iPads and mobile phones to keep children learning from home and connected to their education.

The lessons include literacy skills linked to each year level and physical education (PE) videos for all students. Uploaded each day to Facebook, these videos complement the students other school work and encourages them to keep engaged in their learning.

The school’s Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS) team have been championing the program in their community and engaging with families to promote the videos and helping them access the videos using home devices.

The school has also continued its highly successful Language and Culture program through these online mini lessons.

The Language and Culture program embeds cultural knowledge from the Gangalidda, Garrawa and Waanyi traditional owners into to the curriculum to ensure classrooms are culturally safe and welcoming. The Language and Culture mini lessons are filmed on Country and include lessons in bush fruit and bush medicine.

With Queensland schools heading back to the classroom from Monday 25 May, the culture and language program will continue using new and inspiring ways to engage students.

The creativity of Doomadgee State School has supported students during this challenging time and the school and RSAS team will continue to help students as they transition back to the classroom.
