The closing date is fast approaching for nominations in this year’s National Disability Awards.

Held as part of International Day of People with Disability on 3 December, the Awards aim to honour and recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals, teams and organisations that have improved the lives of people with disability.

Improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is a critical component of Closing the Gap, and that includes supporting people with disability, their families and carers.

Last year the Machado Joseph Disease (MJD) Foundation were finalists in the ‘Excellence in Improving Health Outcomes’ category for their work improving the quality of life for Indigenous Australians and their families living with MJD in Arnhem Land and the surrounding region.

Nadia Lindop, Executive Officer of the MDJ Foundation, said being selected as a finalist last year was a way to build greater awareness of MJD across Australia.

“The Awards are also a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements people with disability make to our communities,” Nadia said.

“We’re only a small team but we’re very proud of the work we do – and the positive contribution we make in the lives of people living with MJD, particularly those in the very remote Indigenous communities on Groote Eylandt and other parts of North East Arnhem Land.”

Supporting people with disability to maximise their potential and participate as equal citizens in our society is a key government action under the National Disability Strategy. It also underpins the development of DisabilityCare Australia, the national disability insurance scheme.

The Australian Government also supports International Day of People with Disability celebrations, including the National Disability Awards.

If you know someone working to improve the lives of people with a disability you can nominate them by visiting the International Day of People with Disability website. Award nominations close 28 June 2013.
