Education is a powerful tool that can lead to greater opportunities and a better future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
Newlines Radio looks at Walgett Community College High School in north western New South Wales and how music and dance has played a role in helping students to become motivated to succeed and stay in school.
Newslines spoke to staff and students, including acting principal Michael Clare, about the school winning a national award for their music video The Gate and the impact it has had on everyone involved in the project, as well as the Walgett Community.
“It has been a very positive experience for the community. I think it has been an exercise in raising their confidence and raising their self-belief in what they can do and achieve,” Michael says.
Increasing school attendance is a key priority in Closing the Gap in Indigenous education outcomes.
