2012’s NAIDOC Youth of the Year recipient Benson Saulo is the director of the National Indigenous Youth Leadership Academy which connects Indigenous young leaders from communities across Australia as our next generation of leaders.

Strong leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is critical to Closing the Gap.

The Australian Government supports a range of programs and initiatives that work with Indigenous people, organisations and communities to build their leadership skills.

NIYLA is an initiative of the Foundation for Young Australians, which is supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

Newslines Radio spoke to a number of young people taking part in NIYLA forums held in Darwin and Sydney about some of the issues that they are passionate about as young Indigenous people.

Dana Patterson was one of the forum participants in Sydney.

“We have got to be proud of who we are and you know we can’t sit back any more, if we want change we have got to speak up,” Dana said.

FaHCSIAs Indigenous Leadership Program aims to develop the leadership capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and youth aged 18 years and over.

Since the program commenced in 2004, over 5,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have participated in a program, embarking on a personal leadership journey to develop the skills to become strong leaders.

The National Indigenous Youth Leadership Academy (NIYLA) connects Indigenous young leaders from communities across Australia as the next generation of change makers.

NIYLA is committed to igniting positive social change by strengthening Indigenous young people in leadership, celebrating collective and individual identity and building respectful relationships at all levels.
