Last year’s NAIDOC Youth of the Year Award winner Benson Saulo is the director of the National Indigenous Youth Leadership Academy, which is cultivating our next generation of young leaders.

Strong leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is critical to Closing the Gap.

The Australian Government supports a range of programs and initiatives that work with Indigenous people, organisations and communities to build their leadership skills.

This week Newslines Radio looks at the work being done to encourage young Indigenous people to become leaders.

There are many Indigenous leadership programs operating where participants can learn more about themselves, meet new people, share ideas, and gain the necessary skills to develop their potential as leaders.

“I really believe that our young people are really ready to step up with the guidance of elders with the knowledge of our past but also with a vision of the future,” Benson said.

NIYLA is an initiative of the Foundation for Young Australians, which is supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

FaHCSIAs Indigenous Leadership Program aims to develop the leadership capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and youth aged 18 years and over.

Since the program commenced in 2004, over 5,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have participated in a program, embarking on a personal leadership journey to develop the skills to become strong leaders.

The National Indigenous Youth Leadership Academy (NIYLA) connects Indigenous young leaders from communities across Australia as the next generation of change makers.

NIYLA is committed to igniting positive social change by strengthening Indigenous young people in leadership, celebrating collective and individual identity and building respectful relationships at all levels.
