Providing communities with well-built houses and infrastructure, and maintaining them, is a critical part of Closing the Gap and will continue as an important part of the Australian Government’s Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory initiative.
Having a house to live in is vital to good health, family, safety, community and jobs.
In this Newslines Radio program some of the local men who worked on the houses share their experiences.
We talk to New Future Alliance, an organisation who has trained local men to work on refurbishing the older houses in the community and assist the tradesmen to build new homes.
“[This job is] good for me and good for the family, supporting my kids with money,” New Future Alliance trainee, Terrance Malthouse, said.
“And the community is looking pretty well now with the new houses. It looks really good.”

The recent construction of new houses and the refurbishments on existing houses in Hermannsburg have been funded by the Australian Government under the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing.
