Remote communities around Australia are coming up with fresh ideas to create jobs and better living standards.

The Australian Government is supporting the creation of Indigenous jobs and encouraging greater economic participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Examples include:

  • The Carbon Farming Initiative, which provides funding to landholders who take steps to reduce carbon pollution. Landholders can choose whether or not to be involved.
  • The new Remote Jobs and Communities Program, beginning on 1 July 2013, and replacing the old Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) and the Indigenous Employment Program.The Remote Jobs and Communities Program will provide more personalised support to jobseekers, linked to their needs and local job opportunities and with greater access to skills development and training.
  • Indigenous Business Australia, which offers free workshops to help you research ideas and develop a plan for your new business. Ongoing support, advice and business loans are also available.
  • The Indigenous Land Corporation, which provides training and employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians, particularly those living in remote areas.
