The Barunga Sports and Cultural Festival in the Northern Territory is one of Australia's longest running cultural festivals.

The Barunga Sports and Cultural Festival in the Northern Territory is one of Australia's longest running cultural festivals.

Held every year over the June long weekend, the small community of Barunga, about an hour’s drive from Katherine, welcomes visitors from around the country and all over the world to come and experience what life is like in a remote Aboriginal community.

Festival stalls showcase local art, community initiatives and fun activities. This year the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs supported the event through the Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory initiative.

Newslines Radio attended the festival and spoke to community members and local service providers about the things that are helping to build a stronger future in Barunga.

“I’m so proud of my community because even though we have a population of just 350, we’re a small community, but big things are happening,” Barunga community member Anita Painter said.
