Newslines Radio: Alice Springs - Caring for youth

Safety and Wellbeing

This week Newslines Radio takes a look at an iconic community organisation in Alice Springs that is providing important programs for at risk youth.

The Gap Youth Centre in Alice Springs was set up in the late 70’s and is a place where people can come and take part in sporting and cultural  activities, arts and music programs and learn how to cook healthy meals, just to name a few.

Newslines caught up with Nick Chandler who is the Off The Street Coordinator at the gap and he told us the main problem facing local youth in the area is the grog.

“Probably as everyone would know from all sorts of national media coverage alcohol is our biggest issue here and that ranges across the board from kids drinking alcohol to kids being in an alcohol environment.”

In this program Nick also explains how important it is to look after our young people and encourage them to be the best they can be.

“Everyone knows youth are our future, that’s who’s going to be looking after the world and running the world so we are trying to set them up as best as possible to have a good life and to have a healthy life,” Nick said.
