Ngarlan Store Indigenous Corporation faced financial difficulties and poor governance issues in 2013, so in November the organisation entered into a five year agreement with Outback Stores.
Outback Stores has taken over the Beagle Bay Store’s management, and the corporation directors are remaining involved to learn better governance and management practices for the future.
The managers have received a lot of positive feedback about the variety of fresh fruit, vegetables and additional grocery items now stocked in the store.
“I don’t have to go to Broome now to do my shopping. I can do my shopping here; they got everything,” a local community Elder said.
On 18 November, the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) appointed Meertens Charted Accountants as special administrators to work with the Ngarlan Store Indigenous Corporation and restore it to good health.
Once this is achieved, the oversight of the store will be returned to the members and a new board of directors.
