The Marngarr Resource Centre Aboriginal Corporation is just one of the many Indigenous organisations around the country that has focused on creating new employment opportunities for people in their community.

The corporation set up a retail centre at Gunyangara in East Arnhem Land to provide training and employment for locals.

Now run by its sister organisation, the Gumatj Association, many Yolgnu people are employed at the centre, which features a coffee shop, nursery, retail shop and a furniture showroom for locals and visitors to enjoy.

One of the benefits of having the centre close to Gunyangara is that community people don’t have to travel long distances to shop or find work anymore.

Dana Mayalarrnga Yunupingu is an Indigenous supervisor at the centre and she said her family are very proud that she has found a job in her own community.

“Gunyangara, my land is how I grow up. This land, that’s why I stay on and work for the land, “Dana said.
