The team from Red Dust Role Models recently visited Yuendumu and Lajamanu communities to host song workshops and raise awareness about healthy living.

As part of the activities, music and film clips were written and performed by school children and community members, to promote healthy living, and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

The production process starts with kids developing an understanding of the key themes around nutrition during activities with a nutritionist or health professional, followed by a music workshop to develop ideas which are converted into verses and a chorus.

The music rhythm is produced by the Red Dust team and the process of recording the song with the young musicians begins.

To celebrate all the hard work and launch of the song, kids are involved in filming a music video about what they have learnt.

The project also engages students in art workshops, music workshops, film production, sporting activities and cooking activities that raise awareness and highlight the importance of making positive lifestyle choices.

Along with using positive role models, Red Dust also works collaboratively with communities by engaging the expertise of local Aboriginal Health Workers (AHW), nutritionists, youth workers and sport and recreation officers.

After the music clip is produced, kids are often found singing the catchy songs in the school and the community, spreading the healthy living messages to their families.

The music video of the Lajamanu clip “Eat Good Tucker all the time” and Yuendumu clip “Live Long” can be viewed on the Red Dust website.
