Lajamanu Students Try a Trade for a Day
The Lendlease Try a Trade Day Expo held in Katherine, Northern Territory, is an annual event that showcases a diverse range of vocational pathways and trade opportunities to students from various schools across the Northern Territory, including regional and remote schools.
Imagine travelling 9-hours by bus from Lajamanu to Katherine in the Northern Territory to participate in a Trade Day Expo. This year, 14 high school students from Lajamanu, in years 10-12, attended the expo for the first time.
For many people living in our cities and regional towns, an Expo may not be a big deal but for people living in remote communities it’s an adventure.
The Work Ready Boys at Lajamanu School enjoyed it, ‘we liked going to the Try-A-Trade event. Our favourite activity was going on the cherry picker,’ they said.

Francois Francois Du Plessis, Manual Arts teacher at Lajamanu High School said it was an informative experience for the students.
‘What the students gained from this experience was huge.
'The students very seldom get the opportunity to leave the community and engage in anything like this, it’s a great opportunity to explore various career opportunities, opening their minds to opportunities outside Lajamanu.’
They have activities so students can have a go – like scissor lifts for students to know what it’s like to work at heights, they have the experience so they know if they like it….or don’t.
The Work Ready Boys at Lajamanu School were enthusiastic about getting a go on the various tools.
‘We really liked the army dog and the big trucks. The electrical power switch activity was good fun. We have learnt more about electricity and it would be great to work as an electrician. We have heard that they are going to upgrade the Buntine Highway and we would like to get a job in construction.’
The Expo empowers students to explore career options and make informed decisions about their future, there are training providers, and schools to showcase diverse trades. Giving students hands-on experiences, workshops, and interactive displays that enable them to explore different trades in an engaging and informative environment.
By interacting with professionals and participating in activities, students understand trade careers practically. This boosts their confidence and helps in making informed choices, envisioning clear career pathways.
‘What was really positive was seeing the awareness grow, that there are student-based apprenticeships that really appeals to our older students,’ said Mr Du Plessis.
As they return home, these young minds carry with them a newfound sense of enthusiasm, informed decisions, and the confidence to pursue their dreams in the world of trades and vocations.
