International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2018
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is commemorated each year on 9 August. This year’s theme, ‘Indigenous people’s migration and movement’ invites us to examine the ways forward to revitalize Indigenous peoples’ identities and protect their rights.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is commemorated each year on 9 August in recognition of the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982.
This year’s theme is Indigenous people’s migration and movement. A UN panel will ‘examine the challenges and ways forward to revitalize Indigenous peoples’ identities and encourage the protection of their rights in or outside their traditional territories.’
The UN Secretary-General is António Guterres.
‘On this annual observance, let us commit to fully realising the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the rights to self-determination and to traditional lands, territories and resources,’ Secretary António Guterres.
