Get to know the Indigenous 2022 ABC Heywire Winners
Each year, the ABC Heywire competition brings young people of rural and remote Australia together to share their stories and tell it like it is.
Every year the ABC Heywire competition provides a powerful platform for young people from rural and remote Australia to tell their stories.
This year, hundreds of people entered from across Australia. The 38 winners were chosen for “telling it like it is” about life in their part of the country.
Amongst the winners are seven Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
They tell stories of courage, resilience and hope, of fighting back against feral camels, becoming a doctor in their home community and taking to the oceans in a cray boat.
Read about Reece from Elliott in the Northern Territory who knows what it means to get back on track and to give back.
‘My Mum's depending on me. I've gotta be a man to look after her. I'm proud of the work I've done to support myself, and her,’ he said.
