Close to 200 people from remote Indigenous media organisations across Australia will be travelling to Ntaria community (Hermannsburg) next week for the 15th annual Remote Indigenous Media Festival.

Supported by the Australian Government, this year’s event will be hosted by the Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA), in partnership with Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA).

Running from 2-8 October, the festival will celebrate the value of remote community media for language and cultural maintenance, information sharing, meaningful employment and empowering communities through self-representation.

It will also be an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media practitioners to build their skills through daily workshops and industry forums.

The Ntaria community will be encouraged to join in many festival events, including the opening night concert, nightly screenings of community videos and the closing night awards ceremony.

As part of the Australian Government’s sponsorship, four remote media organisations have received scholarships to attend the festival: Mulka Project, Yijala Yala Project, Torres Strait Islander Media Association and Youth Radio Umbakuma.

Building on the skills they learn during the six-day event, the scholarship recipients will produce their own Closing the Gap documentaries about their organisation, their community and how media can contribute to Closing the Gap.

The Festival will be broadcast live throughout the week over the 8KIN CAAMA Network and across other regional radio networks across the country, including PAW, 5NPY, TEABBA, TSIMA and the National indigenous Radio Service.
