Cooling off with a Big Splash

Culture and cultural heritage
A long and very wide black pipe snakes from a stand downward to a pool. On the stand are several people and at the pool are a few more. In the background is red soil, trees and buildings.

There is nothing like a slide into a cool pool when the remote community of Punmu, WA heats up in summer.

The Pilbara is hot in summer, very hot, and sometimes you need more than a Water Park to cool down.

And if you’ve just got home from school on the Barrel Train or you are hot and tired after cruising around the BMX track or ‘flying on a dingo’; when all you want is to slide into a nice cool pool, then Punmu, WA is the place to be.

The Punmu Big Splash we wrote about in our last Punmu story, has been built and the 50 or more kids in Punmu are having the time of their lives.

In summer, Punmu temperatures can soar well above 40C for many days so a slide into a cool pool can lift the sagging spirit and provide a fun distraction for kids and adults alike.

Designed by Hartley Saggers from Austland Plumbing in Perth, the pool and slide took a week to construct by 3 community members and 3 Punmu Corporation staff.

John Reudavey is the Punmu Community Co-Ordinator.

‘A huge thank you to all sponsors for their support and looking forward to our next project for Punmu,’ John said.

And talking about the pool itself, he added, ‘The Community LOVE IT!!!’

The weather has now cooled and the pool is closed until the Pilbara starts to heat up again.

Until then, the kids of Punmu have one more activity to look forward to: F1 Go Karts.

This month (June), the faces of the kids in Punmu will light up as they race around the basketball court in karts that also light up.

After the Go Karts, they will be getting a skate park and in the meantime, they have the Punmu Arcade Centre, which is open on Tuesday nights.

Congratulations to all involved and to the adults who clearly love and want the best for the kids of Punmu.
