Changes to funeral arrangements due to COVID-19
Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread throughout Australia, placing those who are most vulnerable in our community at risk.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread throughout Australia, placing those who are most vulnerable in our community at risk.
COVID-19 can be especially dangerous for Elders and people who are already unwell.
To slow the spread of the virus, there are new rules on social gatherings including funerals.
No more than ten people can attend a funeral, and they must observe social distancing.
This may be a very difficult change as Sorry Business is such an important cultural practice for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
But the new rule has been adopted to stop the spread of coronavirus and protect communities.
Cultural funeral practices can still continue so long as they follow this rule. There may be other ways for people to participate in Sorry Business despite needing to be physically apart, such as pre-recording messages to be played at a funeral.
It is important for us all to work together and support each other to stay well and strong during these times.
