Are you looking for a government career? The Australian Public Service Commission is calling for applications for it’s 2013 Australian Public Service (APS) Indigenous Pathways Programs for Indigenous Graduates, Cadets and Trainees.
An initiative of the APS Indigenous Employment Strategy, the APSC works in partnership with APS agencies to provide employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The aim of the program is to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the right skills and knowledge to commence a career in government, whether participants are looking to transition studies into a career, looking for support during tertiary studies or looking to combine paid work with a structured training and development program.
Participants have access to mentors, and support networks of Indigenous staff including past and present graduates, cadets and trainees, providing supportthrough a successful career.
Wiradjuri woman Sarah Burr has now successfully completed the APS Indigenous Graduate program and knows firsthand just how beneficial it can be.
“Training and educational opportunities are great and include practical and theoretical components. As part of the grad year my department put all the grads through a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration at the University of Canberra, which is a great qualification to add to my CV!” Sarah said.
The programs also provide a great networking opportunity for participants to meet representatives across agencies.
“I have also been fortunate enough to travel domestically with the APS for industry tours and conferences, experiences which have introduced me to new people and assisted my networking within the agriculture industry and the Indigenous community,” Sarah said.
“Learning all about government, governance and strategic policy throughout my graduate year has inspired me to keep learning about these important issues within the agricultural and environmental sphere. I hope to begin my Masters in Agribusiness next year in order to progress my career with the APS.”
