The Australian Public Service Indigenous Pathways - helping you reach your professional potential

Culture and Capability

Are you looking for a career in the Australian government? The Australian Public Service Commission is calling for applications for their 2013 Australian Public Service (APS) Indigenous Pathways Programs for Indigenous Graduates, Cadets and Trainees.

An initiative of the APS Indigenous Employment Strategy, the APS Commission works in partnership with APS agencies to provide employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the right skills and knowledge to commence a career in Government, whether you are looking to transition your studies into a career, looking for support during your tertiary studies or looking to combine paid work with a structured training and development program.

Participants have access to mentors, support networks of Indigenous staff including past and present graduates, cadets and trainees, supporting you through a successful career.

Kamilaroi woman, Tamara Suey, completed the APS Indigenous Graduate Traineeship Program and says the benefits of working for the APS are many and varied.

“I have accomplished great things in the initial months of my employment.  Having a career with the APS has given me the experience to learn more about myself, meet new people, share my ideas, develop new skills and gain unique experiences to grow my potential as a leader.

“I have been able to transfer a lot of my existing skills on to the job including time management, emotional intelligence, leadership skills and most importantly sharing and recognising the knowledge of our culture.

“Being a role model to my children, family and community is extremely important to me and I am able to progress my own career without having to sacrifice any contributions to our communities,” Tamara said.

Tamara is also very grateful that she can have a healthy balance between her career and personal life.

“I needed job security and flexibility to allow me to care for my children as a single mum but I was also looking for a career with opportunities to make a positive impact on the future lives of Australians.”

“The support I receive from my management, colleagues and Indigenous mentors has provided me   with the opportunity to successfully perform my duties to the highest potential,” Tamara said.
