Jobs, Land and Economy

The federal election is fast approaching, so you need to get in quick if you want to take advantage of the job opportunities that will be available to help with polling in your community.

The federal election is fast approaching, so you need to get in quick if you want to take advantage of the job opportunities that will be available to help with polling in your community.

Around 70,000 people will be employed at more than 7,700 polling places across Australia to help make the federal election run smoothly.

“We want the staff at polling places to reflect the cultural diversity of the communities we serve, and to close the gap on Indigenous disadvantage when it comes to voting,” says Bob Eckhardt from the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) Indigenous and Community Engagement Team. “We would especially like to employ more young people.”

There are various positions available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with strong communication skills interested to work on election day and throughout the election period.

This includes Voter Information Officers who will be employed in communities where high levels of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation is expected, to help people understand voting and fill out their ballot papers correctly.

“If you’re energetic, good with people, have an eye for detail and can keep your cool when there’s a lot going on, we would encourage you to apply for these roles,” Bob says.

“We can promise an interesting day and an opportunity to help make the votes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians count.”
