2017 Australian Public Service Indigenous Graduate Program – Applications open now!
Applications are open now for the 2017 Australian Public Service (APS) Indigenous Graduate Program.
This program is a great way to transition from study into a rewarding career in the Australian Public Service, providing on-the-job and structured training and support, work rotations and networking opportunities.
The Australian Government is seeking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates from a range of industries who are motivated to further their careers while contributing to the Australian community. We want ideas, fresh thinking, energy and perspectives.
Former Graduate Program participant Gurang Gurang woman Miara Watson wanted a career where she could make a difference and contribute to community.
”After completing the program, I can say that the APS has delivered over and above what I was hoping for. I worked at the Griffith University Careers Service to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and graduates into employment. In that field of work, I was lucky enough to witness some very deadly success stories of APS graduates—this really inspired me to apply for the Graduate Program, along with a lot of support from my friends and family”, Miara said.
“I liked that the APS welcomed graduates with a wide range of degrees and offered so many different roles and fields of work. I felt that my degree in visual arts and combination of different qualifications would be valued”, Miara said.
Miara found unwavering support, respect and encouragement from her managers and colleagues during her employment in the APS.
“One of the significant things I discovered is that I don't have to work in Indigenous specific programmes and areas. My skills and knowledge have been applied in other fields and my 'Aboriginal perspective’ and identity is treated as an asset and not as a limitation of my capability or potential”, Miara said.
When asked why Indigenous people should pursue a career in the APS, Miara says “There are real opportunities, there’s job security which was important for myself and my family. The work you will get to do has a real impact on people’s lives and I think there’s something really fulfilling about getting to see the results of your work.”
Applications close 1:00 pm AEST Friday 8 April 2016. By lodging a single application you will have the opportunity to be considered for over 120 positions in more than 30 Australian Government agencies.
