Mr Wayne See Kee, the first Indigenous Australian to be appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA), has been re-appointed to the position.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said Mr See Kee's appointment would give stability to the TSRA over the coming years.

"The TSRA plays a vital role in recognising and maintaining the unique culture of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people who live and work in the region," Minister Scullion said.

"The CEO is a key position in ensuring that Torres Strait programmes are conducted for the benefit of Indigenous people, policy is developed and the TSRA is accountable to its elected membership.

"Mr See Kee's heritage gives him a unique insight into the many challenges the region confronts and a local understanding of the decisions made by the Board."

"Mr See Kee has been an important stakeholder in this Government's efforts to promote economic development in the region, including through our investment in the Torres Strait owned beche-de-mer (sea cucumber) industry in the Torres Strait.

"The TSRA CEO is a statutory office holder appointed under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005 by the Minister for Indigenous Affairs with the Torres Strait Regional Authority's agreement.

"Mr See Kee was first appointed to the role in 2005 and has served the TSRA with a strong commitment to improving outcomes for the people of the Torres Strait region," Minister Scullion said.
