Media release - Minister Wyatt

Work Exposure in Government (WEX) will this year offer a virtual experience for Indigenous students to learn about opportunities in the public sector and gain valuable skills to get started in a career.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said the mentoring and workshops will be delivered online with skills development projects replacing the in-person visits.

“WEX is a great initiative that teaches young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about Government and how they can get involved in the public service,” Minister Wyatt said.

“We want more Indigenous experience represented within Government organisations and WEX has helped a lot of people identify this as a pathway.

“A key focus of WEX is learning about careers in the Australian Government and students getting the chance to see if a policy or operational job is the right fit for them.

“The Morrison Government is proud to provide financial assistance to WEX to deliver online courses, webinars and monthly e-newsletters to develop personal and workplace skills and offer tips on how to transition from school into a professional workplace environment.

“Students will be paired with mentors to discuss career options and also get the chance to develop a cooperative network so participants can keep in touch and support each other as they enter the workforce.

“Given the virtual method, we are also inviting back previous WEX participants to further strengthen their networks and stay engaged with their mentors.”

Duane Vickery from ETM Perspectives said the new format will provide a different but equally rewarding experience.

“ETMP are proud to partner with the National Indigenous Australians Agency to deliver a program that inspires, challenges and empowers students in a COVID-safe way.

“We have seen and heard from participating students the real value and impact this program has in opening career options, building confidence, and supporting cultural and personal development.”

Registrations remain open for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students around Australia in Years 10, 11 and 12 to participate in the program which runs until November 2020.
