National Co-design Group Co-chair Dr Donna Odegaard AM and member Mr Richard Weston discussed details of the National Voice proposal, and how you can get involved and have your say in the webinar held on 4 March 2021.

A National Voice could:

  • Consist of up to 20 members, with a guaranteed gender balance. Members would represent their state or territory as well as the Torres Strait Islands
  • Include Youth and Disability Advisory Groups
  • Advise and engage with Australian Parliament and Government on relevant laws, policies and programs that are critically important to the social, spiritual and economic wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Connect with Local and Regional Voices to provide views from local communities
  • Work with existing bodies, structures and organisations

Membership for the National Voice could be decided either through Local and Regional Voices, or elections held for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to directly elect National Voice members.

The Interim Report detailing the Indigenous Voice proposals developed through the first stage of the process was released in early January, commencing the public consultation period.

You can read more about the proposals for the Local and Regional Voice and National Voice.
