TSRA celebrates National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day held annually on 4 August, honours and celebrates the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (mepla pikinini) within family and community.

The theme for National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day 2021 is ‘Proud in culture, strong in spirit’.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities have provided love and care for their children, growing them up strong and safe in their cultural traditions, for thousands of generations.

For our children, safety, wellbeing, and development are closely linked to the strengths of their connections with family, community, culture, language, and Country.

Mura Kosker Sorority in partnership with the Queensland Government, Torres Health, Nor Mor Smok, the Queensland Police Service, the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care, and the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) hosted an event on the day at ANZAC Park, Thursday Island from 9am – 3pm.

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre contributed to the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day by offering family friendly activities including, lino carving and printing, traditional storytelling, string games and beading with local cultural practitioners.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day highlights the importance of children being our next generation who will carry on our traditions and keep our culture strong.
