The election for the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Board will take place on Saturday 28 November 2020.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said this election is an opportunity for Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people to have their say on who they want representing them at the regional level.
“The TSRA is an important voice for the Indigenous people of the Torres Strait,” Minister Wyatt said.
“It holds significant influence in the region to set policy and program priorities to advance the economic and wellbeing outcomes of their residents.
“More than 5,000 people are entitled to vote in this TSRA election and, while not compulsory, I encourage as many people as possible to take part in setting the future direction of the Torres Strait.
“We recognise the concerns that some may have in conducting the election during a pandemic. I want to reassure voters the Government is taking all necessary steps to support the safe delivery of the election.
“The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is implementing a number of measures to protect the health of community members and AEC staff.
“It is developing a COVID-19 Work Health and Safety Service Plan to oversee election delivery and ensure appropriate processes are in place so that nominations, enrolments and voting are conducted in a safe way.
“The AEC will also be closely watching the Queensland election that will be held a month earlier on 31 October to incorporate any lessons to further ensure safety.
"This election is an opportunity to get involved in improving the social, cultural and economic outcomes of Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people in the region.”
The election for the 20-member TSRA Board is held every four years. This year’s election was deferred from July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
