A scheme is being established in the Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory and Jervis Bay Territory to provide financial and wellbeing support to Stolen Generations survivors who were forcibly removed as children from their families, while living in these territories.
The Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme recognises the harm and ongoing trauma of children removed from their families and will help survivors gain access to counselling and support services, a direct face-to-face and/or written apology and a financial payment.
The Scheme was announced on 5 August 2021 and will run for five years, with applications opening on 1 March 2022.
To be eligible for the scheme, potential applicants must be:
- an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
- under the age of 18 years at the time they were removed from their family by government bodies
- removed whilst living in the Northern Territory or the Australian Capital Territory prior to their respective self-government or the Jervis Bay Territory.
Applications will be available online and in hardcopy.
Scheme support services will provide free and confidential, practical and emotional support, legal advice and financial counselling.
