The Morrison Government is delivering $1.4 million to support communities and organisations celebrate NAIDOC Week from 3 to 10 July 2022.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said NAIDOC Week is the most comprehensive showcase of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories.
“Every year, we celebrate and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ excellence and their contribution to our country that dates back tens of thousands of years,” Minister Wyatt said.
“It’s a chance to share in our rich history and hold up the many heroes of our past and elevate those Indigenous Australians who are currently making our nation a better place for all.
“With this year’s theme, the National NAIDOC Committee draws our attention to the momentum for change we’re seeing on a number of fronts.
“More than ever before, governments are working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and we are laying the groundwork for strong local and regional voices to inform future policies, programs and service delivery.
“The conversations we have so longed for are happening, more people are getting involved in a wide range of processes to improve justice and representation, and there is a collective will to walk our reconciliation journey together.
“I invite all Australians to join in the celebrations and apply for a grant to host a local activity in support of the week. Details of eligibility and information on how to apply is now available on GrantConnect, www.grants.gov.au
“I also look forward to the return of the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony, to be held in-person on 2 July in Narrm (Melbourne).
“This Awards Ceremony will feature a number of new categories, expanding the scope of nominees and recognising the diversity of talent and sheer number of people committed to telling our stories, protecting our cultures and making lives better for future generations.
“The National NAIDOC Committee has also called for entries in the annual poster competition, for artists aged 13 and over to have the opportunity for their artwork to feature on the national stage, win a $10,000 cash prize and tickets to the Awards Ceremony.
“This is a chance to have your artwork recorded in history alongside many iconic pieces that help create the legacy of NAIDOC.”
The National NAIDOC Committee has also asked for expressions of interest for the focus city in 2023 and 2024, to host the Awards Ceremony and feature their local cultures and Country.
As always, details of the events, more information and the criteria and closing dates for the Award nominations, focus city expression of interest and poster competition are all available on the NAIDOC website, www.naidoc.org.au
