Media release - Minister Wyatt

In 2021, NAIDOC Week returns to its traditional time in the year, running from 4 to 11 July.

To support the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures as an important part of our national story, the Australian Government is again providing up to $1.4 million for registered businesses, schools, local governments and community groups to host NAIDOC Week events.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said NAIDOC Week is one of the most important events on Australia’s calendar, celebrating the unique place and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and excellence, and encourages all Australians to get involved.

“So many Australians look forward to NAIDOC Week every year, which gives us all an opportunity to share in the national celebration of the world’s oldest living culture and recognise the strength and contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make to Australia and our way of life,” Minister Wyatt said.

It is a time to honour achievements, take great pride in traditions that are distinctively Australian, and come together to share experiences and learn from each other.

“The theme for NAIDOC Week 2021, Heal Country! recognises the special connection between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the nation, and opens conversations about caring for land and caring for each other.

“It is an opportunity to talk about how we want our Country to be and what more we can be doing to truly listen to each other, further reconciliation, and deepen our mutual understanding and respect.

“The NAIDOC local grants program will allow hundreds of events that build on the theme and bring the best of Indigenous Australia to you. “I encourage everyone to get involved and share in the stories, art, discussions and showcases that will be enables through this funding and think about what you will do to Heal Country!

Information on applying for a 2021 NAIDOC grant is available on the National Indigenous Australians Agency website, with applications closing 15 March at 7pm (AEDT).

Nominations are also still open for the National NAIDOC Awards that recognise outstanding achievements by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Nominations can be submitted on the NAIDOC website.

Events and information about NAIDOC Week 2021 will be posted to NAIDOC.
