Mirarr People Take The Lead In Jabiru

Media Release

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, today announced the approval of a new Aboriginal owned entity that will hold a lease over the Township of Jabiru on behalf of the local Mirarr traditional owners.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, today announced the approval of a new Aboriginal owned entity that will hold a lease over the Township of Jabiru on behalf of the local Mirarr traditional owners.

The new entity is the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation Jabiru Town (GACJT).

Following the passage earlier in the year of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Amendment (Jabiru) Act 2020, Jabiru is poised to transform into a tourism hub and regional service centre.

“Today’s announcement is an important milestone for the future of Jabiru – it is the next step in realising the Mirarr traditional owners’ vision for Jabiru to be returned to Aboriginal ownership,” Minister Wyatt said.

“With the closure of the nearby Ranger uranium mine and expiry of existing Jabiru leasing arrangements next year, this new entity will support the transformation of the region.

“The traditional owners have demonstrated their commitment and capacity to effectively administer a township lease and so I have approved $1.98 million to be provided from the Aboriginals Benefit Account (ABA) to support the new corporation’s establishment and initial transfer and management of leasing arrangements.

“This funding will allow the traditional owners of Jabiru to forge ahead with plans to re-develop and re-vitalise the town.

“This is the culmination of many years of dedication and hard work by the Mirarr traditional owners to realise their vision of holding a lease over the Jabiru township.

“Advancing the aspirations of the Mirarr people will see the community grow new economic and social opportunities that preserve the local Aboriginal culture and environment.”

The directors of the new corporation include three senior traditional owners – Ms Yvonne Margarula, Ms Nida Manganbarr and Ms Ruth Gamarrawu. Two independent directors will be appointed to the Board to provide expert advice and assistance.

The new entity will also be eligible for further funding through the ABA for future operations and projects that are part of their masterplan.
